"Karl's Komments"

March 2007

Dick Lamm got it right!

I have some pretty strong feelings about what my country is about and what future my grandchildren should have. As a second generation American whose parent and grandparents immigrated here legally from what became the Balkans and one from what was Hessia and none whose native language was English, I can assure you that my parents and grandparents were adamant that I speak only English and become a true American with no other loyalties or identification. Governor Dick Lamm's comments are worth noting and taken to heart. Whatever your politics, please take the time to read this; you will surely have grounds to be troubled! The following was extracted from an e-mail I received from my sister.

We know Dick Lamm as the former Governor of Colorado. In that context his thoughts are particularly poignant. A while back there was an immigration overpopulation conference in Washington , DC , filled to capacity by many of America 's finest minds and leaders. A brilliant college professor by the name of Victor Hansen Davis talked about his latest book, "Mexifornia," explaining how immigration - both legal and illegal was destroying the entire state of California . He said it would march across the country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American Dream.

Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stood up and gave a stunning speech on how to destroy America . The audience sat spellbound as he described eight methods for the destruction of the United States . He said, "If you believe that America is too smug, too self-satisfied,  too rich , then let's destroy America . It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and fall and that 'An autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide.'"

"Here is how they do it," Lamm said: "First, to destroy America, turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bi cultural country." History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour Lipset, put it this way: "The histories of bilingual and bi-cultural societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy." Canada , Belgium , Malaysia , and Lebanon all face crises of national existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficulties with Basques, Bretons, and Corsicans."   (Look what's happening in Iraq today!)

Lamm went on: Second, to destroy America , "Invent 'multiculturalism' and encourage immigrants to maintain their culture. Make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal. That there are no cultural differences. Make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due solely to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out of bounds.

Third, "We could make the United States an 'Hispanic Quebec' without much effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: "The apparent success of our own multi ethnic and multicultural experiment might have been achieved not by tolerance but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated ethnocentricity and what it meant to be an American, we are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together." Lamm said, "I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural subgroups living in America enforcing their differences rather than as Americans, emphasizing their similarities."

"Fourth, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated, and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high school."

"My fifth point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of 'Victimology'. I would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority population."

"My sixth plan for America's downfall would include dual citizenship, and promote divided loyalties. I would celebrate diversity over unity. I would stress differences rather than similarities. Diverse people worldwide are mostly engaged in hating each other - that is, when they are not killing each other. A diverse, peaceful, or stable society is against most historical precedent. People undervalue the unity it takes to keep a nation together. Look at the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed that they belonged to the same race; they possessed a common Language and literature; and they worshiped the same gods. All Greece took part in the Olympic games. A common enemy, Persia , threatened their liberty. Yet all these bonds were not strong enough to overcome two factors: local patriotism and geographical conditions that nurtured political divisions. Greece fell. "E. Pluribus Unum" ->"From many, one". In that historical reality, if we put the emphasis on the 'Pluribus' instead of the 'Unum,' we will Balkanize America as surely as Kosovo."

"Next to last, I would place all subjects off limits; make it taboo to talk about anything against the cult of 'diversity'. I would find a word similar to 'heretic' in the 16th century - that stopped discussion and paralyzed thinking. Words like 'racist' or 'xenophobe' halt discussion and debate. Having made America a bilingual/bi cultural country, having established multi-culturism, having the large foundations fund the doctrine of 'Victimology,' I would next make it impossible to enforce our immigration laws. I would develop a mantra: That because immigration has been good for America , it must always be good. I would make every individual immigrant symmetric and ignore the cumulative impact of millions of them."

In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm wiped his brow. Profound silence followed. Finally he said,. "Lastly, I would censor Victor Hanson Davis's book "Mexifornia." His book is dangerous. It exposes the plan to destroy America . If you feel America deserves to be destroyed, don't read that book."

There was no applause. A chilling fear quietly rose like an ominous cloud above every attendee at the conference. Every American in that room knew that everything Lamm enumerated was proceeding methodically, quietly, darkly, yet pervasively across the United States today. Discussion is being suppressed. Over 100 languages are ripping the foundation of our educational system and national cohesiveness. Even barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation are growing as we celebrate 'diversity.' American jobs are vanishing into the Third World as corporations create a Third World in America - take note of California and other states - to date, ten million illegal aliens and growing fast. It is reminiscent of George Orwell's book "1984." In that story, three slogans are engraved in the Ministry of Truth building: "War is peace," "Freedom is slavery," and "Ignorance is strength."

Governor Lamm walked back to his seat. It dawned on everyone at the conference that our nation and the future of this great democracy is deeply in trouble and worsening fast. If we don't get this immigration monster stopped within three years, it will rage like a California wildfire and destroy everything in its path especially The American Dream.

If you care for and love our country as I do, take the time to contact your state and national legislators and give them your thoughts. This is about the survival of our unique American experiment in free and open government and free and open economics in the world. NOTHING good is going to happen  if you don't become involved. Don't let it be diluted down to what most immigrants came here to escape.

When I first came to Southwestern Virginia I saw many, many trees down along I-81 between Christiansburg and Roanoke left from Hurricane Camielle(1969) that passed through some six years earlier. Hurricane Hugo (1989) left 22 trees down across my fence line that I’m still cutting for fire wood. I’ve seen beach erosion and beach house damage over the years at Holden Beach, NC where we have spent many years watching the loggerhead turtle hatch.

This past week I returned from Slidell LA where I went with a church group to help  repair houses damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Katrina was 50 times worse than Camielle. Yesterday on TV the commentator noted that it would take 35 years to recover from Katrina damage. Consider statistics like, “If you mucked out 30 houses a day, it would take 5 years to clean up just greater New Orleans”. Cleaning up after Katrina is daunting.

We were housed at Peace Lutheran Church ( and  ( which is using its Sunday school class rooms for dormitories for church group volunteers who come to help with Hurricane Katrine recovery. A kind of trailer park is set behind the church to house their additional staff and other volunteers.

Lutheran Disaster Response (  Base Camp ( is set up at Lamb of God Lutheran Church, Slidell to collect information about needs and sent volunteers out to meet those needs. Our group did things like cut up fallen trees from peoples yards, carry damaged property to the curb for trash pickup and replace sheet rock that was damaged from the wind driven water form Lake Pontchartrain during Hurricane Katrina.

While we were there we visited St. Bernard Parish where we saw the recovery efforts at two different churches. Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Chalmette ( ) has extensive damage and was completely gutted in the process of repair. See Katrina on their website.

A second church, Grace Lutheran Church, New Orleans, (;jsessionid=1iol169s52.lion_s) had about seven feet of standing water. It is the home church of our guide and it needs a lot of work to get it up and running again. This is a very good site to explore. Just remember that what you see is not local or peculiar to a single building or a small area. Katrina was 200 mile wide and caused wind damage and flooding as far as 50 miles inland and almost all were damaged or destroyed.

We started with a crew of 9 to evaluate what we could do with the skills and tools at our disposal. Brett met us at his home and we saw that he had cleaned the floors, taken out the damaged sheet rock and insulation and purchased new sheet rock and insulation. He had started to replace some of the damaged wall electrical outlets. All his damaged furniture had been picked up. We finished installing insulation and installed all the new wall outlets he had on hand. The crew of four I was with installed sheet rock through out the house and began taping. Brett works in an oil refinery that is still not producing on line but hopes to get up and running shortly. His family is in Dallas. He works 7 days on and 7 off so he is able to see them for several day twice a month.  On the last day we were there I showed Brett how to do the taping and finishing so he could finish the walls and begin painting. He seemed very pleased with our progress in the short week we were with him. Perhaps he can move his family back into his house soon.

Why am I writing this? We as Americans are the most generous people in the world. We have no State Church and for a long time neighbors helping neighbors was a way of life. When we changed from an agricultural society to an urban society we still helped each other because that’s what we always did. (Especially in the Great Depression days) Three great religions of the world, Christian, Hebrew and Islam, are all children of Abraham. Abraham was “blessed to be a blessing.” And so are we. Jesus said, “If a man has two coats and his neighbor has none, he should share a coat with him.” That’s why I went to Slidell for a week. I needed to share time, talent, skills and resources with my neighbor who is trying to get his life back together while trying to hold a job, fix his home and tend to his family’s need all at the same time. I needed to be a part of bringing hope and encouragement. We heard comments like “If it weren’t for the churches and the college kids, we don’t know where we’d be.”

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville, Va & First Lutheran Church, Marshall, Mn Volunteers

Many middle class people are in the predicament of needing to repair the damage in their house so they can live in it again but they don’t have the time or skills or resources to get it done expeditiously. More than half the people in Bretts housing area are living in FEMA trailers next to their homes. They go to work every day to support their families and gather resources to hire someone to make their home liveable again. There are still  families who haven’t yet returned to recover valuables. Hurricane season starts again in June. If you were to show up at Peace Lutheran Church, Slidell LA, with a few skills and tools and a willingness to work, I’m sure they will direct you to a very fulfilling stay in Louisiana. Remember, God blesses you to be a blessing to others!

What Kind of a Supreme Court Justice Do You Really Want?

I listened for some 4 days to the Senate Judiciary Committee (18 Senators) take testimony from Judge Samuel Alito and many others concerning the suitability of Appeals Court Judge Alito to be confirmed as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

Among the Senators and other witness advocates there were mixed reviews. Almost no one challenged Judge Alito's credentials about him being intelligent, meticulous, knowledgeable of the Constitution, the law and case law precedent.

I heard mostly negative comments about questions of whether Judge Alito would favor outcomes which pleased a particular agenda of the presenter.

I heard mostly positive comments about his treating every case as a new and different  case; judging every case on the merits of the argument based on the Constitution, laws of Congress and case law precedent. (I.e. no surprises)

Judge Alito and others commented that being a judge required a different attitude and way of thinking from a lawyer advocating in a court room.

Most people can appreciate that a judge is like an empire in a base ball game who calls balls and strikes. While one empire sees a bigger or smaller strike zone, the players and coaches want the evaluation of balls and strikes the same for both teams. Or would you prefer that the umpire was biased one way or the other on his whim of the day?

If you believe that the umpire is only fair when he rules for your side and always unfair when he rules against your side then you yourself are unsportsmanlike and no one ever gets a fair shake as your competitor. I saw some of that among the Senators from both sides of the isle.

I'm told that more than 90% of Congress is trained as lawyers. Part of their training is to advocate for either side in a debate and the side is selected by chance. They are evaluated for their performance by how well they research and present evidence for the side to which they were assigned. And most people trained in this way do not become a judge. Apparently few appreciate the blessing of a thoughtful, meticulous, impartial judge except when they win their case. And when they lose, the judge must be predisposed to the outcome. I think I see a little ego damage here.

Now consider that Appellate Court judges rehear cases from lower courts and the Appellate Court affirms or overturns those rulings. Would you expect that lower courts get it wrong so often that they would frequently need to be overturned? The claim that Judge Alito's rulings were skewed against any class of people could just as well be traced to lower courts, too. The lawyers testifying to which I listened didn’t convince me that their statistical analysis was all that rigorous and that finding one or two cases to question in four or five thousand indicated Alito's prejudgment is quite unfounded statistically. But they are lawyers advocating a cause and not statisticians with a background is test & evaluation.

Much adieu was made of a 10 year old girl being strip searched. It was a drug case! Actually she was searched (partially uncovered) in a private room by a female officer with another adult woman present that she knew. Suppose the search was thrown out in the Appellate Court. Now you would have the precedent that hiding drugs on a child’s person is a safe practice and would make children the mule of choice by every drug dealer in America. How many children would you sacrifice to save embarrassment of one 10 year old? And we already know the morality of drug dealers. You do know of other cases of finding drug stashes in baby buggies and elementary school kids carrying guns in their nap sacks to give to their older siblings in school, don't you.

The Warren Court was always a thrill to follow to see what new principal they would find in the Constitution that had never previously been discovered and make it a precedent. President Eisenhower was somewhat surprised how Chief Justice Warren interpreted what was in the Constitution. If one looks at the trend of the Warren Court it is clear that this was a liberal, activist court dedicated to extending and protecting rights that was beyond case law precedent. But the Chief Justice, after hearing an argument, once commented to the effect that he was not about to permit the Constitution to be used to damage or destroy the Constitution or the United States of America.

There were some e-mails and telephone calls to C-span about electing Supreme Court Justices. Elections require that a candidate advocate something in order to be elected. Has anyone been elected to anything by promising to be neutral? Has anyone running under a major political party been nominated by promising to be neutral and even handed? If you want predictable justice for everyone all the time, be very, very careful what you wish for.

President FD Roosevelt loaded (added two more justices) to the Supreme court in the 30's because parts of the NRA (National Recovery Act) were declared unconstitutional. The Congress never could get together to fix it enough to satisfy the court until two friendly judges were added. Of course the NRA didn't work well any how and it took WWII for the economy to recover.

Now we have Congress's continuing incursion into foreign policy and the fear by Congress that Unitary Executive Theory will be implemented by the Supreme Court as established in the Constitution as it enumerates the duties and powers of the three separate branches of our government.

Communications surveillance is claimed to be regulated only by Congress. The Congress discusses and criticizes the military and exec branch for trying to gather information about possible terror attacks. They say that CIA and DIA didn't connect the dots before 9/11 and now they want to take the dots away. The terrorists with whom we are at war do not fight under any national flag, but only under a hi-jacked portion of a major religion. Congress, a committee of differing politicians, seems so worried about privacy that it's more important that no one gets monitored than every one of us is made safer. The middle ground is where no one is safer because not enough of the right kind of messages is being monitored. Remember, the likely threat is against the most vulnerable targets because terrorists feel desperate, powerless and ineffective and resort to what they do because of it. Many terrorists are willing martyrs. Whose children would you select to live in those vulnerable target areas, yours?

Judge Alito has testified that he would listen carefully with an open mind and base his decisions on the Constitution, current laws of Congress and case law precedent. A group of colleagues has verified to the Judicial Committee that the above is the way he currently carries out his duties as an Appellate Court Judge.

Let me ask you this. If you have a case to litigate at the Supreme Court, would you want a fair hearing or would you want the case decided before you could ever make your argument? Did you ask which way the court was predisposed? Would the merit of the case based on the Constitution, current law and case law precedent have anything to do with your argument? Would you want the justices to be impartial or be an advocate? An advocate for who’s side, yours? Why not the other side? It wouldn’t be justice you say.

     I rest my case.

My sister sent me the following article a couple of days ago. I have often wondered why so many people are busting their butts trying to get to "America" and when they get here they don't want to assimilate into the American culture. It appears they want to make it just like the place they left. I'm a second generation American and I know for sure that my parents and grandparents, who immigrated here through Ellis Island, didn't want to return to the 'old country' and didn't want me to speak anything but English.

What will become of our America if we don't insist that newcomers do official business in English and adhere to the Christian ethics our American founding fathers upheld? Very few of my fellow Americans understand that, in most parts of the non-Christian world, religion and ethics are separate. For them, being a good religious  practitioner doesn't necessarily make you a good person with which to associate or with which to do business. Do you think a policy like the following would be good for America?

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.

Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state and its laws were made by parliament. "If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you," he said on national television. "I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia, one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option," Costello said. Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he  said those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other country.

Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off". "Basically, people who don't want to be Australians, and they don't want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then they can basically clear off," he said. Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques.

"Iraq and what's next?"

There are a lot of people I know who don't know much about foreign policy and could care less about that sort of thing. But when the cost of gasoline or heating oil goes up more than 200% in two years, they are all upset. Some feel that it's the president's fault or" big oil's". Well, is it a domestic issue or an international one? When terrorists from the mid east crashed into the World Trade Center in a hijacked airplane, was that a domestic or an international issue? Who is responsible for solving international issues? And who is responsible for solving domestic issues?

What part of the constitution do you think assigns the task of seeing that school children learn to read and write in English? That's left to the states. We are a republic and not a pure democracy. And what part of the constitution assigns the task for foreign policy and the execution of the same? Any high school graduate and any naturalized citizen should be able to tell you in English that the president of the United States is tasked with that duty. When ever we have a president of this country who isn't predominately an astute foreign policy president then we have a generation or more to try to recover from his term(s) in office.

The second largest pool of cheap oil in the world was under the control of Sadam Housein. And he was using oil money to develope the capacity to control all the oil in the middle east. He tried it in the 90's and it looked to me he was preparing for another try. We found hollow artillery shells and we found mobile labs to fill those shells. We found the manufacturing capability to make the dried anthrax soup to go into the shells. We know the lead time needed to dry anthrax soup from cultures in the labs to filling shells is less than a month. Just because his people didn't fire them at Americans doesn't mean he had given up on his plans. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck only a true "unbeliever" wouldn't call it a duck! (Like someone who took four and a half hour to report a drowning to the state police.)

We don't hear much about Afganistan these days. How familiar are you with the geography of the middle east. Where are these fighters coming from that make mischief in Iraq. Who is sending and supporting these suicide bombers. It was mostly Saudis who destroyed the World Trade Center.People from some 26 different countries were murdered there. Terrorists are coming from and through Syria and Iran to get to Iraq. Pakistan is shutting down it's boarders to terrorists. Now look where Iraq is located. If we abandon Iraq, what pressure can we put on Iran to stop them from trying to make nuclear weapons? Do you think the United Nations can put any pressure on Iran or the Europeans who supplied parts and supplies? Get real!

People say we are attracting terrorists to Iraq. Where should we attract them to, Des Moines? You have to understand that our free and open society is an affront to the brand of Islam that insists on demeaning women and where memorization of the Koran in Arabic is the only necessary education. Fore them there is no hope for a better life and it's all our fault because we prosper and they don't. Killing is their solution to their problem. What form of persuasion would you suggest to turn them from their wicked way? Would you risk your children and grandchildren with your plan?

If you look at the rise of militancy of Islam in the form of political terrorism with the support of radical religious mullahs who claim “correct” interpretation of the Koran, you can see a parallel with the European Christian Church of the early middle ages where the power of the church was behind the freeing of the Holy Land and expansion of Christianity by force in the new world. The people who followed the churches wishes were given absolution for whatever they did to accomplish the churches wishes. It only took two or three hundred years before moderate thinking people were able to dissuade the church from offering such indulgences. If we wait for two or three hundred years for the moderates of Islam to stem the tide of political terrorism, what will happen in the mean time to Western society as we know it ? Islamic moderates are being murdered daily in the middle east.

I see a problem here that won't go away on its own. At least, not in our lifetime. To withdraw from Iraq before a self-sustaining representative government is established there, would be an open invitation for Islamic terrorists to come again to the United States to murder and destroy wantonly again and again.
